Learning Outcome 1
Between my rough draft of 800 words and final draft of 1500 words, I had performed many revisions. The rough draft consisted of an introduction, a body paragraph, and a very brief opening to my second body paragraph. When I gave my very rough draft to my peers to revise, they performed both global and local revisions. With their aid, I was able to remove quotes that were not useful to my argument, and I was able to add new quotes that provided solid evidence and introduce new ideas. In screenshot 3, there is an example of a quote that was originally used in my first draft. Compared to my final draft, this quote no longer exists because it did not focus on my thesis and was very weak. My global revisions consisted of reworking my thesis, moving around topic sentences, and digging into my quotes for deeper analysis. I was able to focus heavily on global revisions when I began revising to add more depth to my paper, which allowed me to focus on local revisions later. For example, screenshot 1 was taken from my 800-word draft that introduced an idea that was not related to my thesis. However, screenshot 2 shows a new topic sentence that flows into a paragraph with complex ideas that actually applies to my thesis. These screenshots provide specific changes that I made when engaging in global revisions. I used to be unable to understand how to revise my own work, but taking an outside perspective to revise my own work granted me the ability to engage in global revisions. I truly resonated with this project more than my previous essays because I felt as though I could add my own perspective to engage the audience in a complicated topic. Once I got my draft to around 1500 words, I made local revisions by spending my time proofreading each sentence to add clarity and remove run-on sentences. This included checking my grammar, ensuring my paper was in MLA format, and simply reading my work aloud. The revisions that both me and my peers made between 800 and 1500 words allowed me to develop an essay with a natural flow and give purpose to a significant topic. Reviewing and revising my own essay has allowed me to engage in deeper thinking and dive deeper into the texts on hand through global revisions. Overall, my writing and ability to peer review developed throughout this project and by revising my own writing, I can now critique both my own and others work.
