Learning Outcome 2

Learning Outcome 2

This project was the first time I had ever used Barclay’s formula, which involves bringing in two authors, as well as my own perspective, and putting them in conversation with one another. In my final draft of the project, I used Carr’s perspective of how the brain has met its maximum capacity and Kelley’s thoughts on how technology can be a wilderness due to how vast it is. I was able to integrate both Carr and Kelley into my writing by highlighting their own thoughts from their essays to my advantage. In screenshot 1, Carr’s statement is highlighted and before that statement is a claim, and the quote is then followed by an explanation of his view. The same goes for Kelley’s quote in screenshot 2, which has a claim to introduce his idea, then his statement that is highlighted, and the explanation of the quote. Screenshot 3 includes the “payload” which is the meat of the paragraph where it explores the two authors ideas more in depth. This is also where I added my own perspective by providing personal evidence and siding with one of the authors, in this case Carr. I found that this body paragraph specifically integrated the two authors in a very organized and meaningful manner because it allowed me to take their opposing ideas and bring them in together. The ability to integrate authors and analyze their ideas separately is something that I continue to learn more about, and this paragraph, as well as the essay, allowed me to continue practicing. Prior to this essay, I would explain two authors separately and then try to bring them in together, but it always turned out messy. Since I continue to learn about new ways to organize my writing, I feel like I am developing more as a writer that can use somebody else’s writing to my advantage. The Barclay’s formula of having a claim, quote, and explanation allowed me to broaden my horizons of integration in my essay’s. In the end, this essay granted me the ability to learn more about integration and how to analyze different people’s writings and how I can apply it to my own beliefs.
