Learning Outcome 3

The pdf provided is Kevin Kelley’s writing “Technophilia” which indulges on his love for the technological world. I found myself resonating with this paper for annotations because my thoughts were projected directly on to the paper. When I initially read through this article, I had to leave my highlighter and pencil down to take in the information overload that Kelley laid before me. On my second read through, I highlighted moments that stood out to me, specifically moments where he came to conclusions that most people would not agree with. For example, I made annotations such as agreeing with certain statements by saying “relatable” or “interesting” and something as simple as “true.” Righting down simple statements like this allows me to come back later and see where I found myself agreeing versus disagreeing with the author. Since I serve as an outside perspective, there were several moments in the essay where I played devil’s advocate. This includes in screenshot 1 where I state “good point I guess?” and screenshot 2 where I agree with another writer that Kelley mentions by saying “she has a good point.” Pointing out these little moments make my life easier when I have to come back and search for ideas that may be essential in my writing. Kelley’s love for technology provided a deeper meaning of how he views technology as more than just a tool through his writing, which enabled me as a reader to form conclusions about his ideas. Something that I tend to do when reading a paper through is picking up themes throughout. For Kelley, I highlighted several lines that argued for the beauty within technology, how it can serve as an extension of who we are, and how there is a need over want of technology. Once I find these major themes, I then look for smaller pieces of the paper that provide evidence that extend the reasoning of the author. With Kelley’s direct claims, I was able to draw conclusions, pick up his major themes and further expand upon those ideas in my own writing.
