Learning Outcome 4

Learning Outcome 4

When peer reviewing my peer’s paper, my main point of attack was global revision. Prior to this course, I had never truly engaged in peer reviewing someone else’s paper and digging deeper into it. At first, I felt like I was going to be unable to engage in quality peer reviewing because I had felt incompetent. However, I employed the same tactics that I use for annotating any other paper by reading through the essay first. On my second read through, I attempted to play devil’s advocate by questioning some of the statements made by the author. An example of this can be seen in screenshot 1 where I say, “I am kind of playing devil’s advocate here and just wondering if this is a fact or just something thrown in here” and I also ask, “Is this necessarily true or does it help your argument in this specific part?” Screenshot 1 serves as an example of several of my other comments and how I am trying to get the author to further explain their writing. Since I also struggle with writing topic and concluding sentences, I made sure to point out if this writer was struggling with the same thing. I can be seen doing this in screenshot 2 where I have highlighted the topic sentence and made a comment about connecting the sentence back to the thesis. Something that I kept pointing out was the thesis. Screenshot 3 involves me telling the writer to make a claim before the thesis and reminding them to bring up the thesis throughout the essay. I also heavily focus on the overall format of the essay because it was important to use Barclay’s formula to get the point across. I saw a lot of growth in my ability to revise in this specific essay because I have never viewed myself as someone that can easily attack someone else’s writings. Instead of picking out the small mistakes in the writing, I was able to test what the author was saying by offering them a more complex idea and pushing them to add more evidence with a focus on global revisions. Practicing revision has become much easier to me and I feel more confident in my ability to globally revise other people’s work.
